The appointment at the wrong door
A repairer arrives with the upper address and cannot see the damaged face of the wall from there. The resident directs them downstairs, then calls ahead so the lower household knows why a stranger is coming through. The repair begins with an act of translation between an administrative address and a physical route.
Marks that look like decoration
Small pencil lines on the wall record where measurements were taken. A child has added a neat border around one of them, making the technical mark appear ornamental. The adults leave both in place until the work is finished. The courtyard briefly carries two uses of the same surface without needing to choose between them.
The letter signed together
The households write one request describing both sides of the problem. Their names occupy separate lines, while the account of the damage uses 'we.' The archive story finds its resolution in that modest change of voice, when two competing addresses become a shared explanation of what the wall is doing.
From the fictional county archive
Please treat the enclosed photographs as two views of the same wall. Access has been arranged through the lower courtyard.
