Weather Notebook Room

Weather Notebook Room is an invented workroom on Observatory Rise. It holds a run of handwritten observations made from the same window, with enough small changes to complicate the idea of a perfectly continuous record.

The tree outside the frame

A tree has grown into part of the view used by earlier observers. New entries continue the old format, although the horizon available to them is no longer identical. A note in the front cover explains the obstruction. It is easy to miss when the book is opened directly at a recent page.

The page prepared in advance

Dates are ruled onto blank pages before the work begins. A page with no entry therefore looks official even when nothing was observed. The room's caretaker writes a short explanation across unused spaces rather than letting absence appear self-explanatory. The notebook must distinguish an unrecorded day from a day whose result was simply unhelpful.

Reading across a change of hand

A new observer uses shorter sentences and a darker pencil. The record appears to become more decisive, but the weather has not necessarily changed. The story asks its reader to notice the person behind the format, showing how continuity in a notebook is always partly a collaboration between different habits of attention.

From the fictional county archive

The eastern tree now obscures the low horizon. Earlier entries were made before that growth and are not directly comparable in every condition.
